Choosing the right fishing line

Spread the love

To enjoy a hobby of fishing or fishing trips, one of the important fishing tools is the fishing line. So as not to break up easily when our fishing line is struck by a fish especially the big one, we must choose the right and quality fishing line certainly.

Monofilament fishing line

This cord or line itself is a line made of special material that is used for fishing. We put hooks, floats, sinker and other accessories in this fishing line.

There are two parts of a fishing line which are the mainline and the hook line. fishing line application has to be adjusted with the purpose of what we are going to get while fishing, is it a little fish or a big fish. the diameter of the fishing line is adjusted from the fish type we will catch.

The first thing that needs to be known in choosing the right fishing line is the quality of the line material which is every fishing line has its own characteristic. the better the quality of the string that we use, definitely the more expensive it costs.

The good fishing line has a stable grade. this fishing line is made from a good quality raw material, processed by using a decent machine and good quality control. the stability grade of the string is referred to when it’s made with strict quality control like the diameter, strength, knot strength, elongation, flexibility, and abrasion resistance.

There are two types of fishing lines on the market, Monofilament and Multifilament. Monofilament is a string with a single filament and is made of nylon-based material. While Multifilament is a string that has many fibers. This type of string surface is rough, not as smooth as strings of nylon material. This type of fishing line is widely used as a hobby angler and is usually used for competitions.

Apart from its type, the fishing line is also distinguished from its characteristics. The following are the characteristics of the Fishing Line:

How well the strings can withstand the load. This strength test is carried out using a universal testing machine by pulling strings along 50 cm with a pull speed of 200 mm per minute, then the strings are tested until they break to see their maximum strength.

Knot Strength

Knot strength at the knot, where the strings will break off. Generally, its strength is measured in pounds (lbs) or kg (kilograms). The knot strength test is done the same as the string strength test by making a knot in the middle of the string to be tested, until the string breaks at the knot.

Extension of the string when pulled. The string will extend/stretch out when pulling a load, until the maximum point of the string can not stretch anymore. The test is done by pulling the strings to the point where the maximum string will break.

Friction Resistance (abrasion resistance)

Strings that are not easily eroded / abrasion when exposed to rocks, guiding the strings on the rod and where the strings run on the real. The test is done by swiping the strings until they break using rotating sandpaper and counting the number of turns. The more number of turns, showing the strings are more resistant to friction.

The resistance of strings when bent. The test is done by measuring the resistance of the strings when bent. The greater the resistance shows the string is getting stiffer.

there are two ways to test fishing line. Namely by using a String and Manual Test Tool. The String Test Tool is a special machine for string testing. The accuracy of testing using a tool, compared to manually, is higher.

Measurement manually, we can do using a scale, then the strings are drawn (the scales show a number) until the string is broken. We can also distinguish the fishing line from its packaging, namely the Commercial string and the Hobby String.

Commercial strings

Commercial strings are packaging strings that are sold for more economical use and pay less attention to quality compared to hobby strings. Usually, the use of these strings is to make a living/profit and is used for fishing purposes making/patching nets.

this commercial fishing line is divided into two types which are wrapped fishing line and packed fishing line. wrapped fishing line is in the form of a roll without spool in a plastic package with information on strength (lbs), diameter (mm) and length of string (m).while packed fishing line is a collection of packaged strings, which are sold in packs weighing 4.5 kg.

Hobby String

Hobby String is a string for people who have a hobby of fishing. These strings prioritize qualities such as strength and diameter. There are two types of strings namely Roller Meter Strings in the form of coil strings with spool, with information on strength (lbs), diameter and length of strings and Heavy Roller Strings in the form of coil strings with spool and information strength (lbs), diameter, string length.

Various types of strings have been described. Now to choose these strings there are tips. First, when choosing strings we must know in advance the purpose, whether for commercial or hobby purposes. If the purpose is for commercial, then choosing a string is not as complicated as choosing a string for a hobby.

In contrast to hobbies, many things must be considered in choosing, such as what fish are sought, type of fishing (trolling, spinning, etc.) for the race or not, strength (strength) in units of lbs (pounds) or kilograms (kg) and diameter. Congratulations on choosing!
